NORESCO Installs Solar Power System over Civic Center of Honolulu

NORESCO, an energy services and energy infrastructure solutions providing company, has declared the signing of an accord with the State of Hawaii to install a solar photovoltaic system over the Kalanimoku Building in the civic center of Honolulu Capital District at a cost of $2.9 million.

The 200 kW solar demonstration project is financed by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), and evaluated by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The State of Hawaii in its on-going attempts to make the government office buildings and other facilities to utilize renewable energy and reduce spending on electricity has partnered with NORESCO in the project. The state in its initiative to reduce the reliance on fossil fuel generated energy has unveiled its plans to use 40% of its energy from renewable energy sources and introduce energy effective measures to cut down another 30% by the year 2030. The state has allotted around $33.9 million to equip around 10 state office buildings in the State Capital District measuring over 1.3 million square feet with energy efficiency initiatives.

Jay Johnson, NORESCO’s senior account executive, said that the current project amply illustrates the integrated management of power and water efficiency and the solar installation proves the ready availability of solar energy for the building.
