Siemens Energy Receives Order to Construct Offshore German Wind Power Plant

Siemens Energy has obtained another significant order to construct an offshore wind power plant in Germany. The company will be supplying 80 wind turbines with 3.6 MW output each for the North Sea-located Amrumbank West project and a rotor of 120 m diameter.

The client is an ancillary of E.ON, Amrumbank West. The plant will have 288 MW installed capacity and will supply clean energy for around 300,000 homes when it becomes functional in 2015. This latest order is the seventh order for Siemens from Germany for offshore wind turbines.

Type SWT-3.6-120 wind turbines are presently highly successful in offshore wind power plants of Siemens. These are being deployed in the world’s biggest offshore wind power plant, the London Array among other projects.

The Amrumbank West offshore wind park is located 35 km north and 37 km west of the islands of Helgoland and Amrum respectively. Siemens will supply, deploy and commission the wind turbines as well as undertake maintenance initially for five years. The service base will be Helgoland and the turbines will be deployed over a 32 sq.km area with the depth of water being 25 m.

It is estimated that within five years, 20% of the total wind power market will be offshore wind power plants. Siemens is expecting offshore wind power generating facilities in Europe alone to have an installed capacity of over 80 GW by the year 2030, which is equal to or almost above half the numbers of the power plant fleet presently installed in Germany.

In the financial year 2011, revenue from Siemens’ environmental portfolio of wind power was around €30 billion, establishing Siemens as one of the largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies globally.
