The ultra-flat Orbeos OLED panel wins the Electron d’Or Award for product of the year in the Opto/Display category. The jury of renowned industry and research experts selected OSRAM’s light, energy-efficient Orbeos surface-emitting diode froma total of seven products.
ElectroniqueS is France’s leading professional journal for the electronics industry and has already awarded the Electron d’Or prize 13 times. “We’re delighted to receive the Electron d’Or award for Orbeos. It’s a tribute to our go-to-market project team and our sales department in France, who have ensured, with great passion and commitment, that we can sell a market-ready OLED product today”, says Karsten Heuser, director of the OLED lighting technology division at OSRAM.
By awarding the Orbeos OLED panel, the jury chose a completely new type of light source, which enables a glare-free, soft light with superior energy efficiency at the same time. The Orbeos is only 2.1mm thick and weighs 24g. Unlike conventional LEDs, OLEDs are not point light sources but surfaceemitting diodes, which allow for unconventional luminaire designs. The OLED’s warm white light is similar to that of an incandescent bulb but requires only half the energy and lasts five times as long.
OSRAM presented the first transparent OLEDs at the leading international Light + Building show in 2010. They open up a whole number of innovative application options, such as windows that light at night. In future, OLEDs will make virtually any object and surface a light source.
