Detroit Edison Gets MPSC Approval for Biomass and Renewable Energy Projects

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved two contracts of Detroit Edison totaling 20 MW capacity of renewable energy, sufficient to power around 14,000 homes. This approval has helped Detroit Edison increase its renewable energy portfolio.

The two contracts have been signed for a period of 20 years with L'Anse Warden Electric Co and WM Renewable Energy, calling for energy generation from wood waste biomass and landfill gas respectively. Detroit Edison will buy 3 MW capacity of renewable energy from WM Renewable Energy as well as 17 MW capacity from a wood waste biomass plant of L'Anse Warden Electric Co in Baraga County, Michigan.

Towards meeting the renewable portfolio standard of the state, Detroit Edison is expecting to add renewable power to the extent of 1,200 MW capacity. The company serves 2.1 million customers in the location of Southeastern Michigan.
