Mannvit Engineering Declares the Commissioning of Geothermal Power Plant Outiside Reykjavik

Mannvit Engineering declared that the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant possessed by Orkuveita Reykjavikur, a utility company from Reykjavik and placed outside of Reykjavik, has started generating 213 MWe and 133 MWth.

Mannvit Engineering, which designed the overall plant and provided the mechanical services, has made it known the completion and commissioning of the 4th phase of the plant in December 2010 which appended a 133 MW heating plant. The plant will pipe the heated water to the storage tanks located 12 miles away in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. The heated water will be utilized for bathing and heating purposes. The condensed steam that comes out from the turbine and the water from the steam separators is utilized to maximize the heat and the fresh water is heated up to 176°F. The hot water produced from the plant is utilized for space heating within the city and the generated power is utilized to meet its growing demand for electricity.

The 5th phase of the plant is expected to go online in the later part of this year. The 5th phase will add an extra 90 MW power generation facility and two heating plants with 133 MW capability to meet the growing heat demand. Around 50 geothermal wells are expected to support the production of power and heat.

The services provided by Mannvit Engineering include plant design, project management, environmental impact assessment (EIA), designing of HVAC and other control systems and elaborate mechanical design for the plant. The company was also involved in the preparation of documents for the bidding, evaluation of tender documents, site management, conducting acceptance testing, commissioning and providing training to the plant operators.
