Enovos Luxembourg and project partners, NPG energy and Pholpa, have commemorated the opening of a new biogas plant, ‘Biopower Tongeren,’ in Limburg province, Belgium, on August 31, 2012.
The opening ceremony marked the starting of engines, which will run 8,200 h on an average per year. In the project company, Biopower Tongeren, Enovos Luxembourg owns 24.9%, while project developers, Pholpa and NPG Energy, own 27.5% and 47.6%, respectively.
This biogas plant is the first investment for Enovos Luxembourg in renewable energy in Belgium. Moreover, this plant is first-of-its-kind facility in the Benelux that utilizes a pre-fermentation tank, which enables production of more amount of biogas.
Since the biogas facility is situated mainly in an agricultural region, it will predominantly ferment corn, which is cultivated in close partnership with local planters within a 20 km radius. The resulting eco-friendly biogas is transformed into electricity through a motor and is then supplied to the local power grid. The fermentation substrates are dried by using the heat generated from the process and then reused in the agricultural fields as low-odor, superior-quality fertilizers, thus making a closed cycle.
Enovos Luxembourg’s Head of Renewable Energies & Cogeneration, Daniel Christnach stated that with 2.8 MW capacity, the biogas facility can generate electricity to meet the demand of 6,500 households and can eliminate 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide, a significant progress towards further development of renewable energies.
With the help of the project partners, the facility’s capacity can be optionally increased to 5.6 MW, which is sufficient to deliver green electricity to all households in Tongeren city.
