Description

Class Leading, Proven Performance

Mercury porosimetry analysis relies on the introduction of mercury into a porous material at carefully regulated pressures. Mercury porosimetry not only offers a wide measurement range, speed, and accuracy, but also makes it possible to calculate several sample attributes, such as sample densities (both bulk and skeletal), pore size distributions, total pore volume, total pore surface area, and median pore diameter.

Compared to other techniques, AutoPore V Series Mercury Porosimeters can assess a wider pore size distribution more quickly and accurately.

This device is outfitted with advanced safety measures. It includes new data reduction and reporting options, which provide further insights into the material’s pore shape and fluid transport properties.

Features and Benefits

  • Nineteen standard penetrometer sizes and combinations allow the investigation of a variety of sample sizes and forms
  • Provides rapid and thorough intrusion and extrusion analysis over a wide range of pore sizes
  • Sets a new standard in operator safety with the introduction of additional safety measures
  • Provides scanning and equilibration modes of operation for swift and comprehensive studies, respectively
  • Incorporates user-defined enhanced reporting features via Python scripts
  • Uses MicroActive software, enabling fast modifications to reporting ranges

Technology

Operational Advantages

  • Capable of measuring pore sizes from 0.003 to 1100 µm (calculated with an initial filling pressure of 0.2 psia or 0.00128 MPa)
  • Controlled pressure can be gradually increased in precise increments of 0.05 psia, ranging from 0.2 to 50 psia, allowing thorough data collection in the macropore region
  • Operates in scanning mode and time- or rate-of-intrusion equilibrated modes
  • Real-time diagnostics provide information about possible problems before they become serious or affect the outcomes of analyses
  • Extraordinary precision is ensured by high-resolution (sub-microliter) measurement of intrusion/extrusion volumes, which makes it possible to develop tighter sample criteria, enhance manufacturing procedures, and provide high-quality research data
  • Improved linear motion for the high-pressure chamber’s closure
  • Gathers incredibly high-resolution data—it exceeds 0.1 µL for both the extrusion and mercury intrusion volumes

Design Advantages

  • Features four low-pressure and two high-pressure ports to help increase sample throughput
  • Enhanced safety features reduce the possibility of mercury leaks and operator exposure
  • Available in variants with pressure capacities of 33,000 and 60,000 psia
  • Quick-scan mode permits a continuous pressure rise, nearing equilibrium for faster screening
  • Features a low-noise and high-pressure producing system
  • Provides a variety of pressure ramping techniques, allowing selection of scanning mode for high-speed or on-demand results and equilibration mode for more exact and detailed results
  • Includes a temperature sensor for automatically estimating mercury density for penetrometer calibrations
  • MicroActive software allows for interactive data manipulation, unique report development, and rapid achievement of analytical findings
  • Provides a range of correction routines for baseline (automatic, differential, or manual), providing improved accuracy by mitigating compressibility and thermal effects caused by high-pressure
  • Compensates for material compression under high-pressure analysis

Applications

Pharmaceuticals

Porosity and surface area are important in the purification, processing, mixing, tableting, and packaging of drugs. These aspects can also affect a drug’s shelf life, dissolving rate, and bioavailability.

Ceramics

Pore area and porosity have an influence on greenware curing and bonding. This is critical for defining the strength, texture, appearance, and density of the finished products.

Adsorbents

Understanding pore area, total pore volume, and pore size distribution is critical for maintaining quality control in industrial adsorbents and designing separation procedures. An adsorbent's selectivity is heavily influenced by its porosity and surface area properties.

Catalyst

Catalysts’ active surface area and pore shape both impact production rates. By limiting the pore size, only molecules of certain sizes are allowed to enter and depart, resulting in a selective catalyst that primarily creates the desired product.

Aerospace

The weight and usefulness of heat shields and insulating materials are affected by their surface area and porosity.

Fuel Cells

Fuel cell electrodes must have carefully controlled porosity and a large surface area to produce adequate power density.

Geoscience

Porosity is important in groundwater hydrology and petroleum exploration as it corresponds with the amount of liquid that a structure can contain and the effort required to retrieve it.

Filtration

Filter producers are interested in pore size, volume, shape, and tortuosity. Pore shape often has a greater direct influence on filtration than pore size since it is directly correlated with filtration performance and fouling.

Construction Materials

Diffusion, permeability, and capillary flow all have a substantial impact on the degradation process of concrete, cement, and other construction materials.

Paper

The porosity of the coating on print media is critical in offset printing, impacting aspects such as blistering, ink receptivity, and ink holdout.

Medical Implants

The weight and practicality of heat shields and insulating materials are affected by their surface area and porosity.

Software

Microactive for Autopore

Intelligent, Intuitive, Interactive

MicroActive software significantly enhances functionality, ease of use, diagnostics, and data interpretation, establishing a new standard for high-performance mercury porosimetry.

Method Wizard

Create a method with an interactive step-by-step script, which simplifies the method development process and introduces new users to the AutoPore V.

Mercury Density Calculation

Unlike competing systems, which depend exclusively on mercury density at ambient temperature, the AutoPore V automatically detects the actual mercury temperature, providing accurate density calculations under operating circumstances.

User-Defined Reports and Report Options

Python scripting allows users to quickly build personalized advanced reports to meet particular needs. The new reporting options also provide automated report conversion to PDF or spreadsheet formats.

Post-Analysis Parameter Change

Post-analysis adjustments or corrections can be made to the analysis parameters (such as stem volume, maximum head pressure, and pen constant), reducing the need to rerun samples due to inaccuracies.

Reverberi Method Data Reduction

Obtain data on the distribution of pore shapes. This approach generates a three-dimensional array that depicts cavity and throat size in relation to volume.

Diagnostic Dashboard

Makes automated volumetric or gravimetric calculations for penetrometer calibration easier.

Overlay Multiple Runs and Gas Adsorption Data

MicroActive for AutoPore V can overlay up to 25 runs and allows users to import pore size distributions from gas adsorption isotherms. This enables data analyzed from the micro to macropore range to be displayed in a single report.

Intelligent Data Reporting

When questionable data is gathered, automatic alerts are issued.

Variety of Available Plots
