Applied CleanTech Conducts Successful Trial of Sewage Recycling System with Dutch Waterschap Aa en Maas

Recycling System (SRS) with the Dutch Waterschap Aa en Maas (WSAM), who just released its exciting report about the great commercial potential of sewage mining. The SRS was able to reduce daily operational costs by approx. $2700 in addition to reducing sludge by up to 30 percent.

WateReuse Research Foundation Awards Grant for American Water’s Test Slant Well Project

American Water has been awarded a research grant from the WateReuse Research Foundation to study the level of pathogen removal that occurs when ocean water is collected for desalination through sub-surface slant wells. The research will occur at the test slant well that is currently being constructed in Monterey County, California, by the company’s subsidiary, California American Water.

Abengoa to Construct 20MW Hydroelectric Power Plant in Peru

Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, is to construct a 20 MW hydroelectric power plant in the Mamacocha River in Arequipa (Peru) for the owner, Hidroelectrica Laguna Azul. The project will require an investment of more than 50 million dollars. Abengoa will not maintain any ownership interest in the assets it constructs.

Water Found to Contain More Than 1000 Times the EPA Allowable Level of Manganese

Andrea Dietrich and Amanda Sain of Virginia Tech’s Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering estimated that 50 percent of the population taste threshold for manganese II in water, the simplest ionic manganese oxide, to be more than 1000 times the current EPA allowable level. Their findings appear in the Journal of the American Water Works Association, and they are now looking into possible secondary pollution issues with the release of manganese in air through its use in humidifiers.
