LG Chem to Integrate Six Large-Scale Batteries in STEAG Power Plants

The energy revolution is gaining ground. In the months to come, LG Chem, one of the leading manufacturers of energy storage systems, will be integrating six large-scale batteries in STEAG power plants. As part of the world's largest ESS (energy storage systems) project, STEAG GBS (Großbatterie-Systeme) plants belonging to the German power supplier in North-Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate will be modernized.

EMPA Researchers Produce Double-Layer Tandem Perovskite Solar Cell

Stacking two solar cells one over the other has advantages: Because the energy is “harvested” in two stages, and overall the sunlight can be converted to electricity more efficiently. Empa researchers have come up with a procedure that makes it possible to produce thin film tandem solar cells in which a thin perovskite layer is used. The processing of perovskite takes place at just 50 degrees Celsius and such a process is potentially applicable for low cost roll-to-roll production in future.

AAAS Honors UNH Professor for Exceptional Climate Change Modeling Work

University of New Hampshire Earth system science professor Steve Frolking has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Frolking, a research professor of biogeochemistry in UNH's Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space (EOS) and department of Earth sciences, is being recognized for his contributions in understanding the Earth's carbon cycle and its relationship to climate. Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.

DIBt Grants National Technical Approval to CCA’s Particle Separator for Cleaning Flue Gas

Renewable fuels, such as wood chips, pellets, and firewood are popular. For wood-fired heating systems and furnaces to comply with the new stricter fine dust limits in Germany, particle separators are used to clean the flue gas. The particle separator made by CCA, a spinoff of KIT, has now been granted the national technical approval by the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt). A long-term test revealed that it works effectively and in an economically efficient manner.

EDF Renewable Energy Closes Sale of 50% Interest in Spinning Spur 3 Wind Project to BlackRock Infrastructure

EDF Renewable Energy (EDF RE) has closed on the transaction to sell a 50 percent interest in the 194 megawatt (MW) Spinning Spur 3 Wind Project to a fund managed by BlackRock’s Infrastructure Investment Group (“BlackRock Infrastructure”). This transaction is the third of five signed agreements between BlackRock and EDF Renewable Energy to close. The remaining projects, Roosevelt (250 MW) and Milo (49.65 MW) wind projects, will close upon completion of construction and tax-equity financing.

Nanoparticles Stemming from Sea Traffic Pose Risk to Our Health

New data presented by researchers at Lund University and others in the journal Oceanologia show that the air along the coasts is full of hazardous nanoparticles from sea traffic. Almost half of the measured particles stem from sea traffic emissions, while the rest is deemed to be mainly from cars but also biomass combustion, industries and natural particles from the sea.
