MMRDA Partners with Solar Gem to Illuminate Rajbander Village

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), on receiving support from Science and Technology Park (STP), is illuminating every household on the Elephanta Island’s Rajbander village utilizing solar energy with four lamps in every household.

Residents will be provided with a port for charging their mobile phones. This solar energy illumination will mean that the village need not have to rely on diesel power supply. Even though situated close to Mumbai, the Elephanta Island has not had ample supply of electricity for many years.

STP has entered into a technical partnership with Solar Gem, an Australian company, for this project. Out of the Rs 1 crore that is likely to be spent on this project, 50% will be provided by the government of Australia, 40% by STP and 10% by MMRDA. Design work on the street poles in the village was done by Japanese designer Omura.
