The first phase of 40 MW of their 90 MW wind farm developed by Boralex Inc was officially opened in Ontario recently. The company’s milestone in green power generation is part of its 90-MW planned wind farm project.
The construction of the wind farm began in 2008 and green energy began to be supplied to the grid by the end of 2009. The first phase uses 20 turbines. At the time of project completion, the 90 MW installed capacity would produce an estimated 200 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable electricity. Forty-five turbines will provide electricity to 25,000 homes and will help in decreasing more than 40,000 tons carbon-di-oxide per year.
Boralex, in association with the Chatham-Kent community has been working towards bringing green energy to Ontario's grid. The company has collaborated with several local suppliers for constructing the Thames River wind site. Patrick Lemaire, CEO of Boralex, said that the Thames River wind site would contribute immensely to wind energy generation in Ontario. He appreciated the Chatham-Kent community that has been providing able support to clean energy technologies.
Brad Duguid, Ontario minister of energy and infrastructure, says Ontario is on the path to becoming a leader in clean energy. He added that by partnering with Boralex, the province would soon become an investment hub. Pat Hoy, member of Provincial Parliament for Chatham-Kent-Essex, reiterated the fact that Boralex wind farms would assist in realizing Ontario’s goals by improving on their local economy and providing clean electricity to the people of Ontario.
