NRG Energy, Inc. has purchased the 101-MW South Trent wind farm located close to Sweetwater, Texas. The farm, which commenced operations in January 2009, comprises 44 units of 2.3 MW wind turbines of Siemens having the ability to power over 80,000 homes when the farm is functioning at maximum capacity.
With the announcement on the acquisition of South Trent made in March 2010, the approval was given only on June 11 by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). AEP Energy Partners, Inc. has a power purchase agreement spanning for 20 years for the power produced from this wind farm.
The South Trent wind farm is the fourth facility in the onshore wind portfolio of NRG Energy. NRG Energy operates and owns the Langford wind farm with 150 MW capacity close to San Angelo, Texas and the Elbow Creek wind farm with 120 MW capacity close to Big Spring, Texas. Moreover, NRG Energy is a partial owner of the BP Alternative Energy-operated Sherbino wind farm with 150 MW capacity close to Fort Stockton, Texas. Apart from onshore wind, NRG Energy develops a combination of no- and low-carbon production such as solar, offshore wind, nuclear, carbon sequestration and biomass.
