SolarWorld’s Solar-Powered Racecar Participated in the Tulsa-Chicago Race

The SolarWorld No. 1 solar-operated racecar took off last Sunday along the 1,100-mile course from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Chicago, Illinois in the 2010 American Solar Challenge.

The team of SolarWorld No. 1 comprised future engineers pursuing their education at Hochschule Bochum, which is the Bochum University of Applied Sciences located in Germany. The event put to test teamwork, endurance and engineering know-how.

During the event, the Bochum team competed in timed phases as it tried to clock the lowest elapsed time possible. The racecar harnessed high-efficiency photovoltaic cells for demonstrating mobility without non-renewable fuels and carbon emissions.

A team from Corvallis’ Oregon State University also took part in the competition. This racecar was operated by solar cells that were manufactured in Hillsboro, Oregon.
