Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit Invites Nominees

Nominations for the 2011 Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit are invited. The formal announcement as well as the nomination form has been made available on the website of the University of Delaware. The last date for receipt of nominations is September 3, 2010.

The cash prize of $50,000 and the bronze medal will be given to the person contributing significantly to the growth of solar power as alternative energy resource by means of development, research or economic enterprise or to the person making extraordinary contribution in other ways to the area of solar energy.

This prestigious award is given once in two years and receives funding from the Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit Trust. This award is named in recognition of Karl Wolfgang Boer who is the founder of the IEC (Institute of Energy Conversion) and also the distinguished professor Emeritus for Physics and solar energy at the University of Delaware.

In 1992, the U.S. Department of Energy designated the IEC as a University Center of Excellence. Subsequently, in 1993, IEC, a solar research and development leader, presented its first Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit to Jimmy Carter, a former U.S. President, who has been cited as one individual who focused world attention and spurred development in this relatively unknown technology meant for environmentally friendly and sound energy generation from the sun.
