Frost and Sullivan Proclaims Turkey a Major Wind Energy Market in Central and Eastern Europe

An inquiry by Frost and Sullivan says that Turkey is set to claim a chunk of the wind energy market in CEE. As its aspiration to merge with the EU is achieved the country has understood the importance of developing the wind energy market and other renewable sources of energy, as its electrical consumption seems to be soaring.

In 2007, Turkey called for proposals and came by 751 projects of 78 GW. Licenses have been released for 5GW, of which 402 MW are in the course of erection and 668 MW of projects have also received the go-ahead.

Despite a 0.5% of energy consumption, the spectrum of growth of the wind energy market is striking. From a dehydrated period of wind energy production from 2000 to 2005, this segment doubled in 2006 and tripled in 2007–2008.

Turkey’s high capability to produce wind energy is due to the mechanical wind potential ranging from 6 to 7GW. The Aegean, Marmora, Eastern Mediterranean and mountainous regions of Central Andalusia offer good prospects of wind generation with high velocity at altitudes around 50m.
