MBM Holdings Announces Solar Polysilicon Plant in Dubai

MBM Holdings has unveiled its plans of constructing a solar polysilicon plant in Dubai. For this purpose, the company has formed an entity MBM Solar Holdings for constructing the polysilicon plant.

This plant is expected to have a 2,500-ton annual capacity and is anticipated to produce solar-grade polysilicon products by the beginning of 2012. This project will be developed jointly between ERC Private Limited Singapore and the sponsor MBM Holdings.

Of its kind, this $400-million project is likely to be the first of upstream plants to be built in the UAE and is in synergy with the focus of Abu Dhabi on various downstream solar projects. Currently, MBM Holdings is holding talks with the local authorities for acquiring land as well as power for the project. MBM Holdings’ vision is towards taking UAE as a forerunner in this solar energy industry in the region.

This project makes use of the existing designs of ERC and is expected to reduce the time taken for this project when compared with the lead-time taken for a typical project. The solar project would be constructed in an area of around 250,000 sq. m. This modern plant will make use of the latest equipment for producing polysilicon at competitive prices. Implementing this MBM Polysilicon project would be in line with Dubai’s thrust upon alternative energy and economic diversification strategy as well.
