India to Speed Up Siang River Basin Hydro Projects

India is all set to speed up the hydro projects in Siang basin located in Arunachal Pradesh. This is primarily for countering the Chinese hydel project buildup in Tibet on the Yarlung Tsangpo.

Though Beijing has given assurances that their project would not affect the flow of the Siang River (also known as Yarlung Tsangpo) into India, New Delhi is not taking any chances in Arunachal Pradesh.

Thus, the Siang River basin assumes strategic significance from the international view point. The Indian environment ministry has initiated necessary steps for implementing a 2,700 MW hydro power project in the lower Siang River basin in co-ordination with the JP Group.

The potential of the Siang basin stands at 20,000 MW capacity while only three hydro projects have been identified so far amounting to an overall capacity of 11,000 MW. Given their strategic importance, the environment ministry has already communicated to the power ministry for speedy clearance of these hydro power projects.
