Cogentrix Energy LLC, an electrical energy producing project development company, has secured an agreement with Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo), a company of Xcel Energy, for a solar energy producing project to be situated near Alamosa in Colorado. This solar generating project with 30,000 kW capacity is likely to be completed by Q2 of 2012.
The solar energy generating plant will utilize Amonix, Inc.’s concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems. The Amonix CPV technology utilizes a dual-axis tracking system and optics for focusing sunlight onto high-efficiency PV cells. Therefore, CPV solar is efficient in producing energy. The system will generate around 30,000 kW of solar energy for Xcel Energy’s customers, providing sufficient energy for powering around 6,500 homes.
The plant will be situated on an area spanning around 225 acres in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. The San Luis Valley is an ideal location for solar power generation as it has rich exposure to sunlight. Local permits have been finalized by Cogentrix Energy, which is presently taking steps to secure financing for this project. Work on the construction of this plant is likely to begin in Q1 of 2011. Under a 20-year agreement with Xcel Energy, this facility is expected to start providing electricity from Q2 of 2012.
