SunPower to Construct Solar Power System in Arizona’s Luke Air Force Base

SunPower Corp. has signed a contract with APS (Arizona Public Service) towards designing and constructing a solar PV power system with 15 MW capacity in Glendale, Arizona at Luke Air Force Base.

SunPower is a global leader in manufacturing, designing as well as delivering the most powerful and sophisticated solar technology available in the world.

Scheduled for a 2011 summer completion, this is anticipated to be the largest installation of solar power system at any U.S. government property. The solar project, built on underutilized land of 101 acres, is expected to create about 550 construction jobs while generating about 50% of the Luke Air Force Base’s annual energy requirements.

APS, while owning the solar power system, will sell the generated electricity to the Air Base by means of a long-term contract. The solar system will be enabled with the powerful SunPower Tracker system while making use of highly-efficient solar panels. The system is expected to generate energy equivalent of powering 3,750 homes in Arizona while avoiding CO2 in excess of 19,000 metric tons annually.
