Atlantis Resources Corporation a UK based marine renewable power company, has brought out the AK1000, the biggest and powerful tidal power turbine at Invergordon, Scotland.
This wind turbine will be installed at a separate earmarked moor at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), situated in Orkney Scotland. The unveiling function was attended by technology partners, utility companies and invitees.
The AK1000 tidal power turbine program started ten years back, has cost the company £5M till date. The nacelle for the wind turbine is designed and built by Newcastle based Soil Marine Dynamics and its gravity base structure system assembly was constructed by Isleburn Engineering a member company of Aberdeen based Global Energy Group, and steel for the construction was supplied by Corus’ Scunthorpe. This tidal power turbine can generate up to 1 MW power with a water velocity of 2.65 m/s to provide for 1000 homes. The wind turbine incorporates an 18 M diameter rotor, stands at a height of 22.5 M and weighs 1300 tons. The tidal power turbine is manufactured to withstand rough weather conditions and open sea environs.
Timothy Cornelius, Atlantis Resources Corporation’s CEO said that the unveiling of the AK1000 is significant for the marine power industry in the UK as well as for Atlantis. He added that the project could achieve the result due to the involvement of the people engaged and the faith of the investors. He was optimistic about the capability of AK1000 and its success.
