Salt Lake City to Use Barren Lands to Produce Bio-Diesel Crops

A cooperative development to use sterile farmland to growing bio-fuel crops in Salt Lake City, has received nation wide attention in USA. The partners of the cooperative development include Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake County, Utah State University, South Davis Sewer District and Salt Lake City Public Utilities.

Bio fuel crops

The pilot project of growing bio-fuel crops happening over an area of 20 acres of fallow land by the members of the cooperative development is considered as a prelude to utilizing such publicly owned lands that are deserted. The cooperative is planning to utilize waste lands for cultivating bio-diesel crops as well as to use the land for recycling bio-solids to nurture crops. For segregating the oil from the seeds the cooperative is planning to install suitable machines to help the farmers to produce bio-diesel for reuse in the farm.

The Salt Lake City farm recently received representatives of the U.S. Army who wanted to explore opportunities to implement such processes in the unused barren army lands. The Utah State University utilized its bioconversion trailer and demonstrated the production of bio-diesel from safflower at the site during a news conference. The cooperative is planning to distribute the bio-diesel generated by the project for use in the local government vehicles to reduce their dependence on imported diesel and the cost spent in reducing CO2 emissions in the area.
