Ex-Im Bank Offers Finance to Honduras Wind Farm Project

Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) has provided $159 million as trade finance to a Pennsylvania manufacturer Gamesa Wind US LLC for exporting turbines to the Cerro de Hula wind farm in Honduras. This is the first wind project on a utility-scale in Honduras, which has its project financing executed by Ex-Im Bank.

Ex-Im Bank’s direct loan is for the sponsor of the project, Energia Eolica de Honduras S.A., towards financing the purchase of 51 units of Gamesa G87 wind turbines with 2 MW capacity each for the wind farm with an overall capacity of 102 MW. In Central America, this wind farm would be the largest.

This wind farm will have its location 20 km south of Tegucigalpa, the capital city, in the San Buenaventura and Santa Ana municipalities. Upon completion and becoming operational, this wind farm would become the fourth largest center for power generation in Honduras, generating around 6% of the nation’s power.
