Sullivan County School Receives State Grant towards Biomass Energy System

Sullivan County School District has received a state grant of $630,000 towards a biomass energy system that has been proposed for the Laporte campus of the school district, as per local and state officials.

The biomass energy system has an estimated cost in the range of $1.5 million to $1.9 million and would be providing much of the heat energy required for the Laporte Elementary School and the Sullivan County Junior/Senior High School while providing hot water for theses buildings.

The fueling of the system would be through wood chips and possibly wood pellets too. The system would be replacing 85% of the heating oil consumption of the schools with local biomass that is sustainably harvested. The state grant has been given by the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority.
