ACCIONA Energy has completed the grid connection of its second biomass facility from straw combustion at Briviesca, Spain. The plant, in which a public energy company named Ente Regional de la Energía (EREN) takes part with 15% of the overall capital, has created 100 permanent jobs and drawn €50 million in investment.
This 16-MW facility at Briviesca will consume approximately 102,000 tons of straw annually for producing approximately 128 million kWh of renewable, clean energy, which is sufficient to power approximately 40,000 homes. This is equivalent of avoiding 123,000 tons of carbon dioxide from traditional coal-fired power plants.
ACCIONA Energy has conducted the construction, engineering and development of this facility and will own and operate the plant. The company, by means of supply contracts especially from Palencia and Burgos provinces, has guaranteed raw material supply. Already, the plant has supplied its initial kilowatts of energy to the power grid this week.
Already, the company has a 25-MW biomass facility from straw combustion at Sangüesa (Navarra). Currently, this plant generates 200 million kWh of energy annually by means of burning 160,000 tons of straw.
