Oxnard Schools Soon to be Powered by Solar Energy

The Oxnard School District is considering a plan to power five middle and elementary schools in Oxnard with solar energy. The campuses are likely to be connected to solar power systems erected in parking lots. SolarCity, a Bay Area-based firm, is likely to construct and maintain the solar panels and sell the electrical energy to the district.

The officials of the district are negotiating the terms of a contract, such as expenses and structure design, with SolarCity. A final decision is expected to be concluded for review on October 06, 2010. Over the period of 15 years by utilizing the solar panels, it is estimated to result in savings of around $1.78 million for the district.

Based on parking lot possibilities, Frank Intermediate, Haydock Intermediate, Ramona, Chavez and Marshall schools were selected for solar power. An agreement with SolarCity could include an information online and kiosk which indicates the amount the energy being produced and utilized by the schools.
