Second Wind, a wind power measuring equipment manufacturing company, has announced its decision of moving its production facilities from Somerville, MA to a larger facility at Newton, MA during the second week of September 2010.
Currently, the company manages its operations from its 15,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at Somerville. It has invested around $1 million for its sprawling 20,000-square-foot new manufacturing plant at Newton.
Founded in the year 1980, the company started as a boutique firm that offered equipment for assessing wind resources. The company reforged into the manufacturing area and started manufacturing Triton Sonic Wind Profiler. The Triton system incorporates a SODAR (SOnic Detection And Ranging) to assess upheavals in wind movements at various heights. The system works in combination with SkyService an online service that allows the customers to monitor real time wind data using the web.
Larry Letteney, Second Wind’s CEO, said that the new production facility will enable the company to meet the increasing demand for its SODAR equipment which is vital for collecting wind data and designing wind energy projects. He added that his company has sold around 200 Triton systems to wind farms all over the world and holds nearly 65% of the market share for remote sensing equipment related to wind technology. He revealed the plan of the company to produce 1,000 to 2,000 Triton systems annually.
Letteney has unveiled the future plans of the company to introduce an annual checkup-like feature to assess the wind data with the actual energy output data of a wind turbine to check its problems related to power production.
