Honeywell UOP Gets Ready for Biofuel Production in Commercial Scale

Honeywell UOP, a process technology supplier, is getting ready for advancing the company’s green jet fuel up to the level of commercial-scale production during the next two to three years. Already, the company has commenced the licensing and certification processes.

The production of green jet fuel happened initially with the aim of fueling the U.S. military. Currently, green jet fuel does cost more when compared to petroleum-based fuel due to production in small-scale as well as feedstocks. When more biological feedstocks including algae and camelina become available, the costs might become comparable.

The green jet bio fuel is produced using a process technology that converts used cooking oil, plant camelina, algae and other natural oils, which is later blended into a 50%-mixture along with conventional jet fuels meant for flight. Though Honeywell UOP has the technology readily available, the company’s focus is on certifying green jet fuel which should get over by 2010 end.
