SunPower to Use Ice Energy’s Storage Technology in a Californian Project

Ice Energy, a smart-grid enabled advance level energy storage solution provider for electric utility companies, has announced that it is working along with SunPower Corp on a unique California Public Utilities commission funded project that will merge Ice Bear energy storage technology of the company with that of photovoltaic solar systems manufactured by SunPower.

The project is a division of California Solar initiative’s Research, Development, Deployment and Demonstration Program that attempts to showcase the financial and functional benefits of incorporating the advanced energy storage systems along with the available PV systems to reduce the direct peak-power demand of the business installations. Ice Energy is one among the three energy storage solutions providing companies chosen to participate in the program that will be carried out by SunPower in collaboration with, PG&E, Sandia National Laboratories KEMA and a national level retailing company.

CPUC California Solar Initiative (CSI) aims to generate 1,940 MW of solar- produced electricity by the year 2016, thus making the state of California to have cleaner, greener energy and assisting in the cost reduction of solar systems available to the customers. The CSI RD&D initiative offers monetary aid to invest in solar research and demo projects that noticeably lessen the cost of solar installations and improve the acceptance of solar technology. The initiative also provides aid for any other solar related technology such as solar power distribution and storage that aids to improve alternative energy generation and reduce the dependence on fossil-fuel and natural gas usage.
