Detroit Edison Receives Approval for Wind Energy Purchase

Detroit Edison’s biggest contract for purchasing renewable energy has been approved by MPSC (Michigan Public Service Commission), thus putting into action a 20-year contract with Invenergy Wind which is likely to result in the production of wind energy to the extent of 200 MW capacity in Michigan.

This agreement represents Detroit Edison’s commitment of $1.1 billion towards renewable energy, thus setting the path for Invenergy Wind for installing and operating a wind farm with an area of 30,000 acres near Breckenridge located in Gratiot County in Michigan.

This novel wind park will comprise 125 units of GE wind turbines with a capacity of 1.6 MW each, while becoming the state’s biggest wind farm. These wind turbines are anticipated to become operational by 2011-end after completing construction in a year’s time, while having the capacity for powering approximately 54,000 homes. The contract signifies a huge step in Detroit Edison’s growing portfolio in renewable energy, while providing an option for Detroit Edison towards buying a part of this project upon the completion of construction. The renewable energy portfolio of the utility will be increased by 4%, while this new wind farm will be benefitting the local community as well as Detroit Edison’s customers.
