Keahole Solar to Launch 5-MW Solar Project in Hawaii

Keahole Solar Power, a clean energy company, has entered into a lease agreement with Hawaii’s DHHL (Department of Hawaiian Home Lands) for land in Kalaeloa, Oahu towards a concentrating solar energy project. This 5-MW solar project has been termed as “Kalaeloa Solar One”. This land would become home for Oahu’s largest project in concentrating solar power.

For DHHL, this partnership becomes the first project under its renewable energy portfolio. This is the resultant of the energy policy of the department, thus demonstrating DHHL’s commitment towards a cleaner energy future while supporting the clean energy initiative undertaken by Hawaii’s Lingle-Aiona administration.

Kalaeloa Solar One would incorporate the most advanced solar technology while providing rent revenue partially for the department while another portion goes towards an educational program on renewable energy for the native Hawaiians. This solar project would also enhance the economy of Hawaii by way of creating local jobs. The objective of this project is towards bringing 30 MW of solar energy by 2015 to Hawaii. The Kalaeloa Solar One project is anticipated to be completed by Q3 of 2011.
