Nova Scotia and NewPage Partner for $208-Million Biomass Facility

Nova Scotia Power has maintained that its proposed biomass project at a value of $208 million that involves the NewPage Port Hawkesbury goes on to offer the best opportunity towards meeting the renewable energy standards of the province. The utility had made this statement last week during the project proposal formalities.

Nova Scotia Power opined that the project will be providing for lowest-cost resource of constant renewable energy to be made available by 2013 and that in all probabilities, the utility will be meeting provincial standards towards renewable energy. Nova Scotia Power and NewPage have requested for the project approval without conditions.

This biomass facility would be generating approximately 60 MW of electricity annually which would represent 3% of the utility’s power generation, an equivalent of powering around 50,000 homes. Nova Scotia Power is anticipated to invest $200 million towards this project while NewPage would be supplying fuel along with constructing and operating the biomass facility.
