Sinohydro Inclined Towards Hydro Project in Liberia

Sinohydro, a top dam builder in China, is interested as well as inclined towards a hydro power project in Liberia. The company is so far the only investor interested in this contract towards constructing and operating this hydro power project with an estimated cost of $4 billion. Sinohydro is the only investor to have expressed concern in this BOT project (build, operate and turnover).

This hydro project has been named as the St. Paul river scheme since it is based on the St. Paul river basin while costing approximately $400 million. Currently, Liberia has a power generation capacity of only 10 MW and blackouts are regularly plunging millions of the nation’s citizens into darkness while constraining the mining sector which is economically vital for the country.

Other companies such as the Brazilian mining company Vale and the Israeli company BSGR are also playing their part in helping this west African state towards raising its power production from zero to 1,000 MW by 2013.
