NPPD Signs Deal to Buy Power from the Broken Bow Wind Project

The Broken Bow wind project, developed by Midwest Wind Energy and Broken Bow Wind a subsidiary of California based Edison Mission Energy (EME) the sovereign power production division of Edison International, has signed a power purchase agreement with the Nebraska Public Power District to sell the power produced from the wind farm on its completion in the last quarter of 2012.

The signed agreement empowers the Broken Bow Wind to own and operate the facility and authorizes NPPD to buy the produced power. The NPPD in turn has agreed to trade a part of the power produced by the wind farm to Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska, Omaha Public Power District, Grand Island Utilities and Lincoln Electric System. The construction of the project is set to start from October 2011. The project is the third such project developed by Midwest Wind Energy and EME and signed a power purchase accord with NPPD. Earlier the companies had signed an accord for the 80 MW Laredo Ridge Wind Farm being built at Petersburg, Nebraska and anticipated it to be completed at the end of 2010.NPPD is receiving power from the 80MW Elkhorn Ridge Wind Farm located at Bloomfield, Nebraska which is owned by the companies and functioning since 2009. The accords signed for the new wind farms will increase the wind energy portfolio of NPPD from the current 1.5% to 5%.

Dave Rich, renewable energy development manager of NPPD, said that the adding of Broken Bow facility will put NPPD through half way of its set goal of achieving 10% of its total power distribution from renewable energy sources by the year 2020.
