RWE Innogy Italia is all set to constructing a biomass facility in Sicily. To this effect, the company has entered into an agreement with Fri-El Green Power.
RWE Innogy will hold the majority ownership of the plant and will be holding 90% of project shares along with the joint venture partner. The remaining 10% of the shares will be held by Infrastrutture e Gestioni S.p.A., a Roman Company.
From the current perspective, construction work on this biomass plant will begin before 2010 end while the commissioning has been scheduled for late 2012. This biomass plant has been designed for a 128,000 MWh power generation output, an equivalent of powering 30,000 homes with annual electricity. The investment on this biomass project would amount to $84 million (€61 million).
Enna has been chosen as the ideal location for this project while its integrated supply concept paves the way for the usage of local biomass towards decentralized energy production in close co-operation with Italian partners. Long-term agreements have already been made for wood supply from over 20,000 hectares in tree plantations for the regional eucalyptus. Additionally, nearby woodlands along with unused agricultural areas go on to offer various options towards biomass production. Currently, the contribution of renewable energies towards electricity generation in Italy stands at 6.8%. This value can go up to 17% by 2020.
