Coca-Cola Refreshments USA (CCR) declared that it has installed two UTC Power fuel cells to power the functions of its manufacturing facility at Elmsford New York.
The two PureCell Model 400 fuel cell arrangements offered by UTC Power, a company owned by United Technologies, will meet nearly 35% of the electric power and heat requirement needed at the Coca-Cola manufacturing facility. The installation will help Coca-Cola to reduce its spending on electric power and help the company to improve its sustainability attempts in saving water and energy.
The two PureCell Model 400 fuel cells arranged at the site of CCR are designed to function without relying on the local power utility company. The arrangement will help the company to continue some of its select operations even during grid power failure. As one of the cleanest power generators, fuel cells will generate electric power and heat water by utilizing an electrochemical procedure. The installation of fuel cell will help the company to arrest the generation of around 2,635 metric tons of CO2 emissions and the release of over 4 metric tons of nitrogen oxide. The PureCell Model 400 fuel cells technology provided by UTC Power incorporates an established phosphoric acid-based fuel cell know-how that allows nearly 20 years of continuous usage with over 90% system efficiency. The product is made to function in water-balance and does not consume or discharge water during normal functioning thus preserving millions of gallons of precious water when equated with central power generation and other types of fuel cell technologies.
John Lacey, Coca-Cola’s Sales Center Manager, said that his company is more concentrated in enforcing clean green technologies to reduce its total carbon footprint in its functioning. He added that the introduction of fuel cell technology at its Elmsford facility is one among its several other eco-friendly attempts to accomplish its set ecological goals in 2020.
