SNC-Lavalin Contracted to Construct Waneta Hydropower Expansion

SNC-Lavalin, an Engineering and construction company, has succeeded in getting the $587 million contract to construct the Waneta Expansion. The contract is for building a 335MW hydroelectric power generating facility over the Pend d'Oreille River, located in south of Trail, British Columbia.

The scope of the current contract requires SNC-Lavalin to formulate the design of the construction, build the facility, to supply and complete the installation of two turbine-generators required for the power production and put them into use. SNC-Lavalin will also be involved in building the other required power plant equipment, electric power transformers and construction of a 230 kV gas protected switchgear building for erecting the power plant. The other engineering and building of the plant has already started and the proposed new facility is expected to be commissioned in 2015.

The power project is contracted through a limited joint venture of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT), Columbia Power Corporation (CPC) and Fortis. The companies have completed signing of a definitive accord for the $900m Waneta expansion.
