RES, a renewable energy company based in the UK, has announced a proposal to construct a biomass facility at Alexandra Dock situated in UK’s Port of Liverpool. The company has started the inspection for the feasibility of the $478 million (£300 million) project and based on the results of the study the capacity of the biomass plant will vary between 100 and 150 MW.
RES will forward a proposal for the project to the Infrastructure Planning Committee of the UK in the third quarter of 2011. The new facility is expected to commence operation by 2015. The biomass plant can meet the power demands of up to 250,000 houses in the region and will reduce the emission of carbon by about 450,000 tons per year. It can create 300 job opportunities and 40 people will be employed at the site permanently when the project is over.
As RES’ principle is to use wood-based fuel from renewable resources, the Alexandra Dock plant will use briquettes, pellets, and wood chips as biomass fuel, which will be used in the production of electricity. The project manager of RES, Johanna Doyle said that they have selected the Alexandra Dock location, as it is more suitable for sea transport by which about 80% of biomass fuel can be transported through ship.
