Repsol, KUO to Harvest Biofuels in Mexico

Repsol, an energy company based in Spain, announced that biofuels of over 10 million gallons is likely to be harvested in 10,000 acres of land in the country of Mexico. The Chairman of Repsol, Antonio Brufau, has inked a contract with KUO Group’s Chairman, Fernando Senderos Mestre, to develop a joint company for manufacturing biofuels in Mexico.

The joint firm, known as Kuosol, will yield Jatropha curcas, which is a non-edible evergreen shrub with inherent oil. Kuosol will utilize the lots left unoccupied by pork business. It will also utilize water from the farms present in the vicinity to grow 10,000 hectares of the Jatropha curcas shrub. Initial production at the Kuosol plant is anticipated to start in 2013. Repsol commented that it would grow biofuels worth 10 million gallons by using the Jatropha crop.

Brufau stated that biofuels would play a vital part in the future growth of the company and Kuosol is a crucial benchmark in developing a new energy strategy for Repsol.
