Alcatel-Lucent, a company specializing in mobile, fixed and converged broadband networking, has announced that a 1.2 MW solar power system will be deployed at its Bell Labs headquarters in New Jersey. The company has collaborated with SunPower and ConEdison Development for this major project.
Under the terms of the contract, SunPower will use its T0 Trackers to develop and install the solar power system. The SunPower T0 Trackers are arranged over 3,700 panels to track the sun’s movements during the day time. They reduce land use requirements and increase sunlight capture as much as 25% when compared to the traditional fixed-tilt systems.
The Bell Labs campus will feature a solar array system that will save significant amount of money for the next 15 years. The system will be surrounded by trees and bushes to lend a decorative landscape and provide a visual interest round the year.
Bell Labs’ President, Jeong Kim stated that installing the solar power system represents a significant event for the company as it has pioneered the development of solar technology and produced solar panels to support the U.S. farmers living without the electricity grid.
Kim continued that Alcatel-Lucent has taken a step towards sustainable environment. The move will enable the company’s customers to operate their networks with advanced sustainable technology. Alternative energy also offers an eco-friendly option to power the communications systems, he concluded.
