Duke Energy Generation Services declared that it has signed a power purchase accord with EnergyUnited, an energy utility company, from North Carolina, to supply the energy generated from its solar photovoltaic farm located in Taylorsville, N.C. The company has recently purchased the solar PV farm from SunEdison.
The Taylorsville solar farm incorporates 4,224 solar PV panels and generates enough energy to provide electricity to 150 average homes. Unlike other fixed type of solar systems, the PV systems installed at the farm are equipped with sun trackers to follow the movement of the sun all through the day and thereby generate more power while needing lesser land for the installation of solar panels. DEGS has purchased the project from SunEdison during October 2010. The purchase will augment the solar power production portfolio of the company. The company currently owns a 14 MW solar generation facility in San Antonio, Texas and a 1 MW PV solar production facility at Shelby, North Carolina. Greg Wolf, Senior Vice President and Head of Commercial Solar Business at DEGS, said that his company is aimed at helping its clients to invest in renewable energy products and expressed his happiness to include EnergyUnited in its list of clients.
The accord signed with DEGS will allow EnergyUnited to purchase all the energy output generated from the solar farm for a period of 20 years. The solar farm has commenced its power production during the early part of October 2010. The accord will also enable EnergyUnited to get the applicable renewable energy credits from the project. The energy credits will help the utility company to achieve its government stipulated 10% clean energy portfolio requirement by 2018.
