Jackson Laboratory Goes Green by Constructing a Biomass Plant

The Jackson Laboratory, a biomedical research institution in Bar Harbor, has started the construction of a biomass energy plant. The lab said it was building a prototype energy plant to replace its oil-burning heating system.

The institution will invest $4.4 million for the biomass plant project. The biomass plant project is expected to be completed by early spring. The biomedical research lab believes that the plant will deploy the most efficient technology to convert wood pellets into biomass energy. Wood pellets for the plant will be sourced from suppliers in Maine.

For the development of the plant, Jackson Laboratory had received a grant of $1 million under the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) program, which was organized by 10 states in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.
