ABB declared that it has invested in Pentalum Technologies, an Israel-based company, engaged in formulating a sophisticated wind sensing expertise, meant for controlling and optimizing the functions of wind turbines and wind farms.
The company has made this investment through ABB Technology Ventures, a venture capital division of the company.
The inventive LIDAR (light detection and ranging) technology being developed by Pentalum Technologies identifies the wind transmitter set in the frontal side of a wind turbine from remote to enable easy optimal adjustment of the turbines intone with the incoming flow of wind. The system can also be utilized in pre-assessment survey of wind farms and wind forecasting. The design of the instrument allows marked improvement in the efficiency of the wind farm cost effectively, than most of the measurement technologies currently available in the market.
Girish Nadkarni, who leads ABB Technology Ventures as its head, said that most of the wind power generation optimizing systems in the market is not utilized widely because of the prevailing exorbitant costs and difficulty in utilizing them. He added that his company has invested in Pentalum considering the technology utilized in the product which can considerably improve the power generation process of the renewable energy source and bring in profits for the developing and operating firms.
