Six Hydro Power Projects to Boost Brazilian Utilities

The previous Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s last task was the inauguration of six small-scale hydro plants in Goias, a Central State, to boost the development of the interior regions of the nation.

The total cost for the six hydropower stations would be 2.9 billion reais or US $ 1.72 billion and the combined capability would be 645 MW.

Marcio Zimmerman, Mines and Energy Minister, commented that this hydro energy project would bring in progress and development to the region during the inauguration.

The Brazilian officials also disclosed that this mini hydro power project would augment the electricity capacity of Brazil’s interior cities, which are less developed economically and hence attract investment from external sources. The Brazilian utility sector Regulator, Aneel, has given the go-ahead for commercial operations to begin at the 19.4MW Figueiropolis small Hydro Power stations wherein one of two generators units would start operating in the Central western Mato Grosso State.
