ABB announced that it has received an order from Belgium-based C-Power to connect a wind farm with the mainland grid. Under the $125 million order, ABB will provide the transmission link for the Thornton Bank wind farm.
After the completion of the first phase of the wind farm, ABB connected the wind farm temporarily to the mainland. For the second and third phase of the project, ABB will connect the entire farm permanently to the mainland grid. The overall capacity of the wind energy farm is 325 MW.
The company will undertake the design, system engineering, supply, and commissioning of the substation located offshore. All the wind turbines will be linked to the transformer station through medium-voltage cables laid underwater. The transmitted voltage will be increased to 150 kV at the substation and linked to the mainland grid.
The wind farm has been scheduled to start operation in 2013, and expected to save 450,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The farm will generate 1,000 GWh of electricity each year.
