Badlands National Park Deploys New Hybrid Wind-Solar Energy Solution

A new hybrid wind-solar energy solution has been deployed at the Pinnacles Entrance of the Badlands National Park, South Dakota, USA. The wind-energy solution is designed to offer 25% of the power utilized at the Pinnacles complex that incorporates a warehouse, an office and two entrance stations. The hybrid wind-power will be versatile enough to offer power even in variable environmental conditions.

The wind-energy solution was developed with the funding it received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). It was developed at a cost of $75,000. ARRA incorporates funding provisions that are directed at decreasing carbon emissions and for promoting green energy. The system will also help in saving energy for the Badlands National Park. Power generated beyond the Pinnacles complex’ needs will flow inside the energy grid and decrease the electric bill of the park through the West River Electric Association.

Badlands National Park’s Facility Manager, Wolf Schwarz stated that the hybrid solution at Pinnacles complex is not the end of the Badlands’ alternative energy developments. He added that a new geothermal solution is being considered for the visitor center.
