Sempra Generation, an auxiliary company of Sempra Energy, declared that it has finished the construction of Copper Mountain Solar farm, situated in Boulder City, Nev., which lies around 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The 48 MW solar plant will generate enough electricity to supply power to around 14,000 average homes.
Sempra Generation, commenced the construction of the Copper Mountain Solar Plant located over 380 acres of desert area in January 2010. The solar farm incorporates 775,000 thin-film solar photovoltaic panels that are designed to change the harvested sun power into electricity directly. The company has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) agreement with First Solar, a Tempe, Arizona company, to complete the solar power installation work. The company has contracted a 20 year accord with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG and E) to supply the generated power from the solar farm to the utility company. Earlier, the company had signed a similar agreement to sell the power produced from its nearby 10 MW E1 Dorado Solar plant to PG and E.
Jeffrey W. Martin, Sempra Generation’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said that the finishing of Copper Mountain Solar installation is a major achievement for the company and it proves the ability of the company in installing large-scale solar plants within the quickest possible time to meet the clean energy needs of the nation. He added that his company is looking forward to developing around 1,000 MW of solar power projects in Nevada, Arizona and Canada for increased returns.
