U.S. Air Force Academy Decides to Go Solar

The U.S. Air Force Academy will harness solar energy for its use soon. The solar project is the result of a joint initiative by the Air Force Academy and city of Colorado Springs Utilities.

The project will start with an investment of around $18 million and will have solar panels installed over an area of 30 acres of land owned by the academy. In future, the project can be expanded to over 80 acres of land. The solar project will be located along the Interstate 25 north of the N.Academy free way. The solar panels will be installed over the poles erected for the purpose. The project is financed by the federal stimulus funds.

On completion, the power generated from the facility will meet approximately 14% of the total power needs of the academy. The AFA is planning to attain self-sufficiency in power generation in a few years time.
