Cox Communications in order to reduce its reliance on the local power grid and to reduce its carbon generation has invested in the implementation of power generation using fuel cells.
Recently, it has finished the construction of two separate 400 kW fuel cell installations at its headquarters in Federal Boulevard and Euclid Avenue in San Diego. While one of the fuel cell meets 100% power supply requirement of the company, the other fuel cell covers nearly 60% of the power demand of its main building
UTC Power, a company of United Technologies, has supplied the PureCell Model 400 fuel cells required for the installation. The completed fuel cell project represents a component of the company’s nationwide initiative called Cox Conserves Program. The program is introduced to lessen the carbon discharges of the company by 20% by the year 2017 and to encourage ecological sensitiveness among its own workers, local communities and other businesses. The 800 kW fuel cells project of the company will produce adequate power to supply electricity to 602 homes every year.
The power generated from the facility can be equated to planting of new trees over 618 acres of land or saving of around 1 million gallons of water every year. In total, the green energy efforts of the company will prevent the entry of over 16,000 tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year.
