Scotland Approves Hydro Energy Scheme Proposed by RWE

Ministers in Scotland’s Government have approved a new hydro energy scheme with a potential of powering 2500 homes. RWE npower renewables had submitted a planning application for a 4.5 MW hydro project located on Maldie Burn near Sutherland’s Kylestrome in the year 2009.

There were no objections from the Highland Council as this plan would achieve generation of electricity from the natural water resources of Scotland.

According to Jim Mather, Energy Minister of Scotland, this project would not only boost the renewable capacity of the region but also facilitate job creation for the local people. According to him, hydro power still plays a significant role in the renewable energy sector and that the Maldie Burn Scheme was a fine example of natural assets being used for creation of new green jobs.

Scotland plans on generating 31% of its total electricity from renewable sources in 2011. Rob Gibson, Scottish National Party MSP, revealed that the nation was on the path to achieve this target.
