Metso to Provide Gasification System for Biogas Production in Sweden

Provider of sustainable technology and services, Metso has secured an order worth €30 million to supply a gasifier to maintain new gasification technology to Göteborg Energi’s sophisticated project called the GoBiGas20MW, which is slated for operation during the beginning of 2013.

The Metso gasification system uses a new licensed technology for indirect gasification designed by REPOTEC, a firm based in Austria. Wood pellets and forest residue are the major fuels of the gasification system. The system in combination with consequent methanation and up-grading system will generate high-calorific biomethane, which is then supplied via the available gas grid.

The GoBiGas20MW plant is manufacturing biogas through gasification of wastes and biofuels from forestry. A prototype gasification plant is slated to be constructed in two phases to exhibit the green gas technology. GoBiGas (Gothenburg Biomass Gasification Project), mostly owned by Göteborg Energi, will own and operate the demo plant.

Metso will be participating in the first phase during, which the 20-MW gasification facility is constructed on the existing sites of Rya Värmecentral in Gothenburg, Sweden between 2011 and 2013. The final plant will have a commercial-scale capacity of nearly 100 MW of biogas with an operational period of 8000 h per year.
